We love movies. Ok, maybe that’s a bit of an understatement. For most of us, movies have been an integral part of our lives. When we were little, it was a big deal to sit down with the family or friends and watch the newest releases. As we got older we looked forward to watching those action and horror films that kept us on the edge of our seat and awake at night. Today we can share the movies we loved with our kids or make a date night to head out with our significant others or friends to see that newest comedy. If we don’t head out to the theatre we can stream our favorites directly to our living room. Perhaps you’re still ‘old fashioned’ and enjoy collecting a large library of your favorite films on DVD and Bluray. Whatever your choice, it’s clear that movies play an important parts in our lives.
There’s a lot of money to be spent and made in the movie industry. For instance, James Cameron’s Avatar reportedly cost $425 million to make but grossed an astounding $2.78 billion. Christopher Nolan’s immensely popular Batman reboot also did well with The Dark Knight Rises costing $275 million to make but bringing in nearly $1.1 billion. With so much money (and reputations) at stake, filmmakers hire the best actors they can, get the best writers they can and do their best to make sure that every little thing is perfect in the film. Specific lines, costumes, the lighting and sound – if one little thing is off and noticeable it can make a great movie into something far less.
Take films like Die Another Day, King Kong, Catwoman and The Scorpion King – all could have been fine movies if not for the absolutely brutal CGI effects that made them look as though they were made on some kid’s computer as part of a school project. Don’t even get us started on bad writing. Watch any of the Star Wars prequels and you’ll see what happens when terrible writing meets sub-par acting. Everyone in the theatre cringed when Hayden Christensen, in the middle of a heated life-or-death light-sabre battle told Obi Wan Kenobi that “from my point of view the Jedi are evil.” What evil Sith lord would ever say that?
Of course, movies can still be solid fan favorites, and considered to be great, even if they have mistakes strewn throughout. No movie is immune from having the odd slip up. Camera slip ups, continuity errors, animation mistakes and just straight up unintentional bloopers – these all exist to varying degree throughout a lot of the films we love. For the most part, we likely missed them the first few times through. Nonetheless, there’s a good chance that at some point you’ve seen a microphone boom or crewmember visible. Perhaps you noticed an object that was there in one shot, gone in the next, only to return mysteriously in another angle. These are all common types of movie mistakes which, often times, become as famous as the rest of the film.
